LOST N(OT) FOUND
Single-channel video loop of animated found footage,
binary synth audio, projector, cracked porcelain bowl, bucket
A found social media clip of a Palestinian boy scraping a huge pot for food is isolated and transformed: the boy frozen, the pot animated, projected on to a tilted cracked bowl; the projector above – like a passive witness, or an eye captivated by the repetitive transmission of mediated images of suffering.
The work confronts viewers with loss and trauma and their own complicity as spectators of moments they cannot intervene in. The mediated image saves the moment from oblivion by the act of extraction, interpretation and display – the moment becomes both frozen and alive, mediated yet urgent. It is exposed. It demands attention. The downward projection positions the audience above as accusatory, hierarchical, complicit witnesses of loss. They are forced into observation and reflection of their own passivity.
The audio is created from the raw digital data (the ones and zeros) from the original footage. These numbers are turned directly into sound using a binary synthesizer. The sound underscores the tension between the immediacy of the original event and the mediated, abstracted form in which it is now experienced. Thus, the image echoes as audio – fractured, urgent, and impossible to ignore.
